Switzerland’s leading newspaper publishes a story about PFVMH

The Neue Zürcher Zeitung, one of the world’s leading and oldest German-language newspapers, has published a story about the Pirogov First Volunteer Mobile Hospital. The story is based on an extensive interview with PFVMH co-founder and leader Gennadiy Druzenko.

According to NZZ, Druzenko doesn’t trust the quiet. During the months of Russia’s full-scale war on Ukraine, he has learned that stillness is where danger can come from any time. “When he hears a sharp noise in the distance, the Ukrainian immediately thinks a Russian fighter jet is approaching. His gaze checks the horizon and then wanders to the Üetliberg. Then he recalls, ‘Right, I’m in Switzerland.’ The quiet is the norm here,” the story reads.

The story allows German-speaking readers to learn about PFVMH and what it does at the front lines as well as about the terrible price paid by Ukrainian warriors who defend their homeland.

“Sometimes I think the Russians are necrophiles, they must love death. I can’t explain their brutality any other way,” says Druzenko.

He also mentions noncombat challenges he and his team have to answer. The volunteer hospital does not receive any government support, whereas each month of the war costs it at least $100,000. For example, in Zurich, Druzenko was trying, among other things, to raise $15,000 to buy a Swiss-made mobile ventilator. “Most of our sponsors come from the United States, we still get little support from Europe,” he says.
